Ancient Greece certainly did not have the technology we do today for sex toys

In history, sex toys have a very long history. And apparently, sex toys even go back to the ancient Greeks — Greek soldiers made dildos out of bread for their wives while they went to war for their wives to have something to pleasure themselves with.

In Greek, these dildos are called olisbokollix — the term olisbos refers to a dildo, and the term kollix refers to a loaf of bread.

According to Professor Alexander Oikonomides, the bread dildo may have occurred as a joke in ancient Greek inscriptions. But they were present, and they were often made at home. They could have also been made by bakers for special occasions.

One commenter on Reddit said the bread dildos would likely give yeast infections. I agree — I don’t see how bread dildos could be healthy or remotely pleasurable.

However, author Vicki Leon at The Huffington Post, these bread dildos served the function of being discreet. They were easily biodegradable and eco-friendly, so they could be discarded after penetration. If someone really wanted, they could eat the bread dildo as well.
